A Foot and Mouth Disease Induced Model of US Excess Supply of Beef AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Ofori-Boadu, Victor; Salifou, Samaila.
Agriculture is a vulnerable sector of the U.S economy, accounting for 13% of Gross Domestic Product and 15% of employment. It produces quality cheap food for domestic consumption and accounts for more than $65 billion in export revenues. Contagious animal diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) are often referred to as economic diseases because of the magnitude of harm they cause producers, local communities and the consequences in international trade. Losses from the 2001 FMD outbreak in the United Kingdom are estimated at $10.7 to $11.7 billion. The total cost of an FMD outbreak is the sum of eradication cost, production losses, and the loss of exports. This paper examines the export effects of a bioterrorist attack such as the introduction of...

Anti-foot-and-mouth disease virus effects of Chinese herbal kombucha in vivo BJM
Fu,Naifang; Wu,Juncai; Lv,Lv; He,Jijun; Jiang,Shengjun.
Abstract The foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) is sensitive to acids and can be inactivated by exposure to low pH conditions. Spraying animals at risk of infection with suspensions of acid-forming microorganisms has been identified as a potential strategy for preventing FMD. Kombucha is one of the most strongly acid-forming symbiotic probiotics and could thus be an effective agent with which to implement this strategy. Moreover, certain Chinese herbal extracts are known to have broad-spectrum antiviral effects. Chinese herbal kombucha can be prepared by fermenting Chinese herbal extracts with a kombucha culture. Previous studies demonstrated that Chinese herbal kombucha prepared in this way efficiently inhibits FMDV replication in vitro. To assess the...

Competitiveness of U.S. Meats in Japan and South Korea: A Source Differentiated Market Study AgEcon
Mutondo, Joao E.; Henneberry, Shida Rastegari.
The restricted source differentiated almost ideal demand system (RSDAIDS) is used to estimate the parameters of the Japanese and South Korean source differentiated meat demand models. Expenditure and own-price elasticities indicate that Japanese beef, Canadian and Danish pork, and Brazilian and Thai poultry have a competitive advantage in Japan. The BSE outbreak in Japan decreased the shares of Japanese and U.S. beef. Regarding South Korea, the results indicate that imported beef from the U.S. and Australia, Danish pork, and South Korean and Thai poultry have a competitive advantage. The U.S. BSE outbreak decreased the market shares of U.S. beef in the South Korean beef market.

Mapping the likelihood of foot-and-mouth disease introduction along the border between Brazil and Paraguay PAB
Amaral,Thaís Basso; Gond,Valery; Tran,Annelise.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to apply fuzzy majority multicriteria group decision-making to determine risk areas for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) introduction along the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The study was conducted in three municipalities in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, located along the border with Paraguay. Four scenarios were built, applying the following linguistic quantifiers to describe risk factors: few, half, many, and most. The three criteria considered to be most likely to affect the vulnerability to introduction of FMD, according to experts' opinions, were: the introduction of animals in the farm, the distance from the border, and the type of property settlements. The resulting maps show a strong spatial...

Public Policy, Invasive Species and Animal Disease Management AgEcon
Sumner, Daniel A.; Bervejillo, Jose E.; Jarvis, Lovell S..
There has been a rapid increase in recent years in invasive species and animal management economic research. Expanded interest in the topic has been partially driven by the practical importance of public policy to deal effectively with invasive species, given its public good aspects. This paper shows that the basic criteria of public goods: non-rivalry and non-excludability, apply directly to animal disease border measures and eradication services, with some caveats. It is also argued that public policy should assess disease control and eradication on grounds of biology, national economic interests, and international cooperation. Specific regulations and programs must be evaluated on the basis of cost benefit principles.

The Effects of E. Coli 0157:H7, FMD and BSE on Japanese Retail Beef Prices: A Historical Decomposition AgEcon
Saghaian, Sayed H.; Maynard, Leigh J.; Reed, Michael R..
This study examines the time-varying Japanese price reactions to the 2001 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) discovery, the 2000 outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD), and the 1996 E. coli food po isoning events. Historical decomposition of retail-level price-series aids in explaining the behavior of beef prices in a neighborhood (period-by-period time interval) of the three events. This is based on an application of directed acyclic graphs, constructing orthogonal innovations to determine causal patterns behind contemporaneous innovations. The results show the beef safety events had different negative impacts on Japanese retail beef prices, suggesting that consumers understood and differentiated among the health risks. The results provide...
